General Summary
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) directs patient care under the supervision of the Physical Therapist, performing assessments and interventions as ordered by the patient's physician(s), within the scope of their practice; participates in interdisciplinary care coordination and care planning process.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Accurately assesses patients and collaborates with Physical Therapist to provide necessary interventions.
Coordinates care with their assigned Physical Therapist weekly and as needed for any change in patient condition.
Follows established plan of care for all assigned patients and performs interventions as per the plan of care.
Participates in interdisciplinary care planning for all assigned patients.
Promptly reports all changes in patient condition to the Case Manager RN or Physical Therapist and the patient's physicians(s) as appropriate.
Provides cost effective and efficient physical therapy with regard to patient visits and medical supplies.
Provides patient/caregiver education as per the individualized plan of care and evaluates effectiveness of the plan.
Reports to the Physical Therapist any problems related to patient/caregiver education.
Completes all documentation within specified timeframes.
Appropriately manages time and daily tasks to achieve daily productivity goals.
Job Qualifications
Education
Graduate from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program required.
Work Experience
Minimum one (1) year experience in a Joint Commission accredited hospital.
Minimum one (1) year experience in an acute rehab facility or equivalent serving the adult population.
Six (6) months home care experience preferred.
Computer skills preferred.
Certification/License
Current license as a Physical Therapist Assistant in the state of Missouri.
American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification.
Current driver’s license and declaration of automobile liability insurance.
Mental/Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time and to walk up and down flights of stairs.
Ability to receive and express detailed information through oral communications, visual acuity, and the ability to read and understand written directions.
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to lift, transfer, and move patient with weights of 10 – 200+ pounds and who vary with ability to assist.
Ability to safely operate an automobile.
Working Conditions
Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and body fluids.
Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and hostile persons at times.
Works with sharps and other potentially biohazardous materials.
Variation in environmental temperatures.
Exposure to various community environments.
